“Democracy is a problem that capital is always trying to solve”
- George Monbiot
I have been around a while now, and so I am quite numb to most breaking news, but the sentencing of the climate activists in the UK last week left me feeling outraged, disgusted, and terrified. A total of 21 years in prison - that is what the judge deemed appropriate for these heroes standing up against Big Oil. The harshest penalty of five years went to Roger Hallam, who did the most criminal of acts… he attended a Zoom call. So we are now reaching a point in time where climate activists are receiving far harsher penalties than anyone in the fossil fuel industry has ever received for endangering humanity.
Big Oil lied, people died, and our democracy is fried (although it's not yet, and we can still win it back).
I suppose these Judges will start sending floods to prison for blocking roads, because incase they missed it, the floods are planning on being far more disruptive than any climate activist will ever be.

I guess things could be worse, your government could potentially ban free weather reports - at least that will never hap- new reports coming out of the USA have shown that one of the goals of Project 2025 is to dissolve the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, ultimately putting weather behind a paywall. Do you know the only thing worse than a hurricane? A surprise hurricane. The conservative approach really is 'hear no climate change, see no climate change, speak not of climate change.'
It's not all doom and gloom though, new data coming out of China shows that they are on track to reach their clean energy targets this month, six years ahead of schedule. They are installing so much wind and solar that it is the equivalent of building five large nuclear power stations per week.
Talk about being disruptive, a computer malfunction caused widespread chaos and a ‘global outage’. To the economists who made it sound like the end of the world, wait until you find out about tipping points and ecosystem collapse, now that will be a ‘global outage’.
Onto billionaires, there were two stories this week that I found interesting. Mr Beast just confirmed that 34,000,000 pounds of trash have been removed from the ocean as part of his TeamSeas campaign - imagine a world where all billionaires battled to do the most good. But then the prevailing nature of most billionaires. Elon Musk, Climate Traitor: Tesla’s CEO has endorsed former President Trump for a second term. His priorities have never been clearer. He's a capitalist oligarch, heir to a fortune. This is who they are. It's who they all are. Capitalism rewards sociopathy so don't be surprised when all the people running the system are sociopaths.
People all around the world are waking up, and never before has the nature and climate movement been this organised, this motivated, or with this many people wanting to get involved. So, to finish on a hopeful note, check out this super fantastic action by activists in Berlin.

Okay so climate change is getting intense & you want to get involved:
1️⃣ Social influence - wake your networks up to how dire the situation is
2️⃣ Influence politics & governments - lobby & become an activist which comes in many forms, or maybe get involved in local politics.
3️⃣ Shift investments - ensure your finances aren't investing in damaging practices such as war, fossil fuels, deforestation etc.
4️⃣ Organise!! Join a climate group, organisation or local movement.
5️⃣ Behavioural change - inspire the world & markets around you by (imperfectly) being the change you wish to see, reducing meat consumption is one of the biggest individual impacts someone can make.
5️⃣.5️⃣ Systemic change - we desperately need to consider how our systems are designed to drive decline, and work towards dismantling the oppressive and extractive ways that are forced upon us.
6️⃣ Look after yourself & each other 💚
7️⃣ Is there a local campaign working to endorse the @fossilfueltreaty, if so, support their work, if not, start a movement and get your local government to endorse!
